    On the sea again in Haiti

    Marlene lives with her husband and their 6 children in Belle-Anse, in the southern part of Haiti. After Hurricane Matthew hit the island, she lost all her fishing equipment and she couldn’t take care of her family. We offered her relief and assistance, and gave her fishing material to weave new fishing traps. Now she is on the sea again, earning a living, and keeping her family healthy.

    On October 4th, Hurricane Matthew slammed into Haiti, bringing with it torrential rain that washed away homes and crops ready for harvest. Livelihood of all sorts were destroyed, including 180 fishermen in Belle-Anse.

    Haiti: Relief efforts step up following hurricane

    Malteser International’s aid efforts continue in stricken Haiti, three weeks on from Hurricane Matthew’s devastating landfall. Tools and equipment were distributed, and our staff helped clear streets and drainage channels in some of the most heavily affected areas in the immediate aftermath of the hurricane. The floodwaters have mostly receded, but conditions in the country remain appalling, and the risk of a cholera epidemic is still high. Donate to relief efforts today.

    With our recent hygiene kit distribution 6,000 more lives are more protected and less likely to add to the 3,500 suspected cholera cases that have already been reported since Hurricane Matthew made landfall on October 4th.
