The situation in Haiti since January 2024 has greatly deteriorated with powerful gangs controlling much of the capital, Port-au-Prince and violence is rampant. According to the UN over 2,500 people have been killed, kidnapped or injured since the start of the year. Hunger has reached unprecedented levels, according to a new assessment released on March 22, backed by the UN. According to the report, 4.97 million people face crisis or worse levels of acute food insecurity, including 1.64 million people facing “emergency” levels.
Children and women are the most vulnerable.
Malteser International Americas has been in Haiti since the 2010 Earthquake, working with the most vulnerable. Despite the current security situation, we are staying. In the words of Yolette Etienne, Partner and Program Coordinator of Malteser International in Port-au-Prince,
