Colombia: How Eduar Overcame the Odds of Malnutrition
In the northern Colombian city of Santa Marta, many families living in poverty are struggling to meet their basic needs. In the city’s most underserved neighborhoods, hundreds of families face daily challenges in accessing medical care and adequate nutrition for their children.
Rates of child malnutrition are increasing, placing many young lives at risk. Limited access to health services and consistent food sources has left families searching for reliable support.
One case that reflects these challenges is that of Eduar, a two-year-old boy born in Santa Marta. When health workers from MI Americas met Eduar during a community nutrition screening event, they diagnosed him with moderate acute malnutrition. His condition required immediate care.
“We knew something was wrong, but we didn’t know where to go,” said his mother, Yuleima.
MI Americas responded with direct, ongoing support. Through the nutrition program in Santa Marta, we provide critical services including community screenings, regular medical follow-ups with specialists, malnutrition treatment kits, and personalized case support.
Eduar’s progress was closely monitored by health professionals. Within a few months, he showed notable improvement. Physical improvements in weight and height marked a turning point in his recovery.
“Today he’s stronger,” said Yuleima. “He plays, eats better, and we’ve learned how to continue caring for him.”
MI Americas has provided over 3,000 families in Santa Marta with food, supplements, medicine, and education on healthy eating. We continue working to ensure that the malnourished children in Colombia have the treatment they need to live a healthy life.
