Across the world: Drought and hunger in Africa
Around the world, people are suffering. Nearly 24 million people in Africa are currently facing starvation and their situation is becoming increasingly critical. “Climate change is not solely responsible for the current hunger crisis. Violent conflict, unequal distribution, and poor governance are also contributing factors.” said Sid Peruvemba, Vice-Secretary General of Malteser International. “In order to tackle these issues, we are therefore committed to working through our partners to bring positive changes where necessary. However, the immediate challenge is providing aid for survival, and for this, we are asking for support.”
While South Sudan is engulfed in civil war, large parts of northern Kenya have seen very low rainfall in the past months. Due to the threat of Boko Haram in Nigeria and Cameroon, many people have fled their homes and are unable to till their fields.
Malteser International is systematically expanding its emergency aid. Funds have been increased for existing aid projects in South Sudan and Kenya, and refugees from South Sudan are currently receiving assistance in Uganda and DR Congo. Malteser International has been active in six African countries for decades.
