New Clinic Brings Hope to Indigenous Communities in Colombia
Transforming Rural Healthcare in La Guajira
In the northernmost part of Colombia, La Guajira’s indigenous and multi-ethnic communities have long struggled to access basic healthcare. Geographical barriers, inadequate road infrastructure, and the absence of nearby medical centers mean that rural residents must travel up to 50 miles for urgent care—often at great risk. These challenges have contributed to high disease and mortality rates, particularly among children, mothers, and the elderly.
A major milestone will soon change this reality. In November 2024, the first Comprehensive Community Care Center (the Center) was inaugurated in the indigenous community of Trilillimana, located in Manaure, La Guajira thanks to MI Americas’ partnership with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and operates in partnership with IPSI Anashiwaya, a local indigenous healthcare provider. This facility will serve as a lifeline for over 23 indigenous communities and more than 4,000 individuals, providing timely, free and accessible health services close to home.
For residents like Eloisa Epinayú, the Center will be life changing. After six months without a medical check-up for her baby, she will finally receive the care she needs. “Thank you for providing us with this care. We no longer have to walk for hours just to see a doctor; now, we have one right here in our own community.”
A Community-Driven Model of Healthcare
The Center is part of MI Americas’ initiative designed to revolutionize rural healthcare through a community-driven approach. With a model tailored to remote and indigenous areas, it ensures accessible, culturally sensitive, and high-quality care.
This facility will offer:
- General medical care
- Medication distribution
- Nursing services
- Vaccinations
What makes the Center unique is its intercultural approach. By integrating traditional Wayuu healing practices with conventional medicine, the Center will respect and reflect indigenous customs while providing effective, high-quality care.
From Crisis to Change: A New Healthcare Landscape
MI Americas is committed to strengthening La Guajira’s healthcare network by establishing two additional centers in vulnerable communities in the coming months. By continuing to collaborate with government entities and international partners, MI Americas is building a strong foundation for a healthier future in rural Colombia.
