Cologne/Yangon. On March 28, 2025, a powerful earthquake with magnitude 7.7 struck Myanmar. The quake occurred at 12:50 p.m. local time near the city of Sagaing in central Myanmar. Tremors were also felt in Thailand, more than 1,000 kilometers away. The main shock was followed by multiple aftershocks, including one with a magnitude of 6.4. Initial reports indicate widespread destruction in several cities across Myanmar, with residential and office buildings, bridges, and historic landmarks partially or completely destroyed. Myanmar’s military junta has confirmed that the death toll has surpassed 3,600, with over 5,000 people injured and more than a hundred still missing. Fatalities have also been reported in Thailand. Experts fear that the actual number of casualties in both countries may be significantly higher.
