An “Egg”cellent opportunity helps impoverished Haitians achieve resilience
Maurice Moncher Gerce and his family are familiar with struggle. His whole life has been filled with uncertainty, instability, and insecurity. Frequent disasters, long-standing droughts, and ecological destruction perpetuate a life of struggle. And, lack of opportunity and skills exacerbates the poverty. It is a tumultuous cycle that all too many Haitians are familiar with in their country, and one that they find hard to escape without help.
But, sometimes you get by with a little help from your friends. And, in Maurice's case, and for others who are struggling in his community, those friends ended up being Malteser International Americas and our local partner-on-the-ground in Haiti, PENAH.
It is all part of our program in Tabarre, Haiti, which helps impoverished locals like Maurice become empowered and more resilient, create opportunities for financial stability, and achieve food security. After years of desperation, Maurice was given the chance to change his future by participating in our program. With our help, Maurice secured 10 chickens for his coop, which produce a minimum of 30 eggs every five days!
The result of this opportunity for Maurice are tremendous. Aside from the boost in self-confidence, finding stability, and living once again with dignity, the are eggs, which he sells to locals and stores in the community, serve as a source of sustainable income for Maurice. Maurice has begun to see an improvement in his livelihood and with time he plans to expand his hen house and begin to raise pigs and turkeys.
