Haiti Earthquake 2021: Urgent Appeal
Dear friends,
We are urgently appealing for your help as the impact of Saturday’s earthquake in Haiti is worsening by the day.
Massive 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti on August 14, 2021, and our teams both on the ground and at both headquarters have been working around the clock to get you the latest information on how you can help in what will inevitably be a long recovery. Emergency relief efforts are our immediate priority and your help is urgently needed.
Situation (what we know):
- 1,297 people are confirmed dead, with thousands still missing, and over 5,700 injured, so far. These numbers are certainly not final as rescue crews continue to work through the rubble, trying to save as many people as possible.
- Looming Tropical Storm Grace is expected to make landfall tonight, complicating relief efforts and exacerbating the extensive damage with the potential for flash floods and mudslides.
- Reports suggest nearly 13,694 homes have been destroyed, meaning that more than 30,000 have been left homeless.
- Hospitals, churches, and schools which haven’t been leveled by the quake are overwhelmed.
- The shock (and aftershocks) of the earthquake was felt throughout the country, but the epicenter was in the southwestern departments of the South, Nippes and Grand Anse. According to reports, this earthquake was more powerful than the 2010 quake which killed more than 220,000 people.
Your donations today will allow us to provide for the most immediate needs: Our team has performed several initial assessments and has determined the most pressing needs in the communities of Petit Trou de Nippes and Baradères, where our programs have been based for several years, as well as in Miragoane and Les Cayes.
Our first immediate response includes:
- Medicine kits to support local health centers;
- Food and drinking water for those who lost their homes (targeting 1,000 of the most vulnerable);
- Plastic sheets for protection against expected heavy rains (targeting 100 of the most vulnerable families)
In the following weeks, we will:
- Provide hygiene and food kits;
- Support reconstruction efforts (tools and materials);
- Rehabilitation of water systems, tools for cleaning rubble;
- Support for health centers (PPE, masks for COVID-19 prevention, basic equipment);
- Mental health support.

For this emergency, MI Americas is working on the ground in coordination with local and national agencies to assist the neediest in the most efficient manner. Your assistance today can make a huge impact in Haiti’s recovery.
