In Riohacha, a city in northern Colombia that is acting as a host community for many Venezuelans who have fled their country, we are caring for 12,000 vulnerable migrants and returnees in need of medical care and financial assistance.

Working with Malteser Colombia, Malteser International Americas is supporting the delivery of food, medicine, and hygiene items. Two psychologists are providing psychosocial support to children and women affected by the displacement, and in some cases, sexual violence.

Additionally, 400 people are receiving cash assistance to cover basic necessities, which is helping to stabilize their living situation in the Colombian territory. Read about refugees like Cindy, a mother who fled Venezuela with her children, who is receiving our assistance.

Cash assistance in humanitarian emergencies is widely recognised as one of the most significant areas of innovation in humanitarian assistance. It has great potential to meet more needs, more efficiently and more effectively.

It helps meet the Sustainable Development Goals, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the United Nations New Way of Working.

We find that it helps to bring dignity back to people who have had it stripped away because of a crisis. Helping people to live healthier lives with dignity is a goal of all our humanitarian work.
