Hurricane Florence expected to bring life-threatening storm surges
The National Hurricane Center is warning that life-threatening storm surges are headed for parts of the Carolinas' coastline, and flooding is expected to be equally imperiling. As the massive storm moves inland, it could unleash a deluge of 40 inches of rain, which is nearly as much as the 50 inches that fell in Houston after Hurricane Harvey. Malteser International Americas is in contact with the local Catholic network in the area and is ready to support relief and recovery efforts if they are needed.
While the storm is now a Category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson Wind Scale, flood waters are more deadly in hurricanes than the wind, as seen in the video below. Anyone in the are is urged to heed all warnings and local evacuations to remain safe.
Should the flooding be as severe as predicted, vulnerable families and communities will need help recovering from the devastation that floods leave behind. You can support our relief efforts donating today.
