Hurricane Season 2020: Preparing for Emergencies in Haiti
For the past few days, an elongated zone of low pressure had been forming in the Atlantic Ocean. It is now a tropical storm called Isaias. This tropical storm, currently at the level of the Dominican Republic should touch the north coast of Haiti between today and tomorrow, before continuing on its way to Florida. Given the size of this tropical storm, several regions of Haiti will most likely be impacted by heavy rains and potential flash floods.
Malteser International Americas, which has been working in Haiti since 2010, is currently running projects in Cité Soleil, one of the slums of the capital Port-au-Prince. As part of its projects to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable slum communities, MI Americas has been working on the impacts of climate change through natural resource conservation and disaster preparedness and has developed a partnership with the Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC).
Within this framework, MI Americas trained brigadier members of the Cité Soleil Communal Civil Protection Committee (CCPCCS) in first aid in 2018 and equipped them with search and rescue equipment. The same year, we also equipped the CCPCCS with mattresses, sheets, blankets, pillows and portable lighting to equip 4 gathering places in case of disasters. In 2019, we also collaborated with CPCCS to conduct cyclone awareness days. At the beginning of the year, we provided CCPCCS with 3,000 hygiene kits.
Similarly, in collaboration with local partner organisations UJEDCOCIS, La Diferans, PENAH and RRH-CIPROG, we financed clean-up campaigns and construction works to improve waste water drainage channels in order to limit the risk of flooding in certain districts of Cité Soleil.
MI Americas remains committed to vulnerable populations and is therefore closely monitoring the situation and preparing for any humanitarian response that may be required at Citٞé Soleil.
