Keeping Santa Marta Safe, One Neighborhood at a Time
SERVICES PROVIDED
In August of this year, the Malteser International Americas medical team, based in Santa Marta, Colombia, was able to serve the Vista Hermosa, Cristo Rey, Aeromar and Don Jaca neighborhoods, providing 975 consultations in general medicine and 130 in psychology.
We’ve admitted 60 new pregnant women to the prenatal control program, bringing the total number of participants to 66 as of August 28th. The women have received services in gynecology, nutrition, psychology, dentistry, and have received vaccinations, ultrasounds and the delivery of medications. Both uninsured Venezuelan women and uninsured Colombian women are participating in the program.
DELIVERY OF CARE PACKAGES
Together with our partner Abiudea, we successfully delivered 500 care packages with non-perishable food items and hygiene kits to 500 families throughout the Milagros 1, Milagros 2 and Villa Bethel 4 neighborhoods.
Our main objective with this initiative was to directly benefit over 2,500 people – migrants and Colombians – who are highly vulnerable to the effects of the current pandemic.
To ensure our assistance reached those who needed it most, we conducted an assessment of each neighborhood several days prior. This allowed us to identify the most vulnerable households and to understand the specific needs of each neighborhood.
EQUIPMENT DONATIONS
Medical equipment was donated to the Santa Marta Municipal Health Department. Among the items delivered were: spinal boards, first-aid kits, scales, glucometers, stethoscopes, blood pressure monitors, measuring rods, and plastic chairs, among others.
With this delivery, we want to continue strengthening primary healthcare in Santa Marta.
Improving the health and dignity of those who need it most is our mission!
