Over 800 people have died after a 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and triggered a tsunami on Friday, September 28. Roads have been damaged, power lines and telephone networks have broken down, and water supplies have been destroyed. Many people are still buried under the rubble of their houses and the sheer number of casualties have left hospitals overwhelmed.

The Indonesian government has called for international help to deal with the aftermath of the disaster. Malteser International is deploying an emergency response team to the country to help meet the urgent needs of people affected by the disaster.
