Malteser International & UNICEF Deliver Emergency Aid to Families in Colombia
Riohacha, Colombia: Malteser International Americas, the National Risk Management Unit and UNICEF Colombia joined forces to provide assistance in the neighborhoods most affected by thunderstorms in the District of Riohacha in La Guajira, Colombia. The heavy rains caused serious damage and floods causing material losses, health problems and increasing unsatisfied basic needs.
A multidisciplinary team of Malteser International Americas offered primary health care with delivery of medications and psychological support through home visits in the Iler Acosta and Villa Fátima neighborhoods. Three-hundred and seven residents of the Iler Acosta neighborhood and two-hundred and twenty eight in Villa Fátima were treated, guaranteeing access to health in this tragic situation.UNICEF delivered hygiene kits with COVID-19 prevention items to 140 families in the affected communities.
This activity was carried out under the leadership of the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), in coordination with the WASH Roundtable of La Guajira, also with the support of the Civil Defense Force, the Halü Bienestar Humano Foundation and ZOA.
