Miraculous Moringa
Solange is a 63- year-old mother of seven who benefits from the community gardens supported by Malteser International in Haiti. In her particular garden 60 families directly benefit, however there are approximately 800 families that reap the rewards from 10 local gardens in Cite Soleil.
Each garden produces a variety of crops, including cherries, eggplants, almonds, and the miraculous moringa tree, which is Solange’s favorite. She likes moringa because of its healthful properties.
Moringa leaves are an excellent source of many vitamins and minerals. It has been praised for its health benefits for thousands of years and it is very rich in healthy antioxidants. Used in foods or as a tea, it also prevents high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and it reduces inflammation.
According to Solange, “Moringa is the most important crop. It is known as the Miracle Tree.” She went further to say, “I thank God because I feel better.”
Being able to produce moringa not only allows for better health, but it also has financial benefits. Normally, moringa is very expensive when purchased in the store. The gardens have had incredible benefits for the community, but more can be done. According to Solange, “Life is still tough. We need more support.”
In addition to planting, cultivating, and harvesting the crops, the families are responsible for the upkeep of the garden, including building fencing and maintenance. Teaching accountability to achieve success of the garden as a whole is also a component of the health and nutrition program.
