Mother’s Day: Adelina’s Story
As part of our Mother’s Day series this year, we’re highlighting the lives of a few of the thousands of women we’ve supported as they prepare for the lifelong journey of motherhood. Here is Adelina’s story:
A few months after arriving in Colombia, Adelina Palmar, who was 19 at the time, discovered that she was pregnant. She had left Maracaibo, Venezuela, due to the socioeconomic crisis in her country, which left her with no economic opportunities.
Adelina’s sister had already emigrated months before, so she followed her along with her partner, looking for a job, but due to the pregnancy, she did not have many options, nor was it easy for her to find information that could help her solve her legal situation as a migrant in Colombia.
Thanks to a neighbor, she learned about MI Americas and all the work we do for the Venezuelan migrant community, especially for pregnant women. Through our services, she was advised on how to obtain her Temporary Protection Permit, and thanks to our dedicated doctors and medical professionals, she was able to get the prenatal care she needed.
In April 2023, Alana was born, receiving postnatal health services such as pediatrics and medical examinations. “I feel very grateful for the kindness of the MI Americas professionals, everything has been excellent,” says Adelina.
This Mother’s Day, let’s support mothers like Adelina in Colombia and around the world.
