As part of our Mother’s Day series this year, we’re highlighting the lives of a few of the thousands of women we’ve supported as they prepare for the lifelong journey of motherhood. It’s important for us to remember that even though we work within migrant and refugee communities, we are primarily serving individuals – mothers, fathers, daughters, sisters, and brothers – who have come to access our services from a variety of different backgrounds, and are not defined by their migration status. Like us, they are simply doing their best for their families.

Here is Yuberlin’s story:

At the end of 2022, Yuberlin made one of the most important decisions in her 26 years of life: to leave Maracaibo, Venezuela and migrate to Colombia, along with her father and three children. So, on January 3rd, 2023, she arrived in Colombia and began working recycling garbage, while her father worked as a fisherman.

“The love for my children was the main reason to make the difficult decision to migrate,” says Yuberlin.

Yuberlin came across MI Americas one day when a health brigade arrived in a neighborhood close to hers. There, she and her three children received care in general medicine and were prescribed the medications they needed. Since then, she’s continued receiving our healthcare services whenever the health brigade came to her neighborhood.

In fact, our doctors told her the good news – she was expecting her fourth child! “They have helped me a lot at MI Americas, I have been able to receive services that I had not had before, such as dental care, gynecology and nutrition, from excellent professionals,” says Yuberlin.

This Mother’s Day, let’s support mothers like Yuberlin in Colombia and around the world.
