"Being involved with Malteser International Americas is an important way of living the charism of the Order of Malta. I believe it is the most efficient and effective way of serving the sick, poor and disadvantaged in recurring international disasters.
"I am a typical retired husband, father, and grandfather. I don’t have specific skills related to providing international care to the most vulnerable in the world. So instead, I help as much as I can through my donations. I was a director on the Leadership Council of Catholic Relief Services(CRS) for several years, so I understand international development.
"Malteser International Americas is different from CRS because here we typically respond to natural and man-made disasters through partners who are already on the ground. And if there is a need and a request from the local partners, we can provide on-going long-term assistance and achieve lasting gains.
"I got involved with Malteser International Americas in 2000 when I was recruited by Bob Tiernan and Dick Madden to become a Knight in the Order of Malta. They told me about the Order, specifically the work of its global humanitarian relief arm, Malteser International. They also explained how the organization was trying to start an office here in the U.S., and how I could help offer some advice, considering my experience with CRS. Dr. Dale Peterson, a doctor and a Knight in the Western Association from Washington, who served in Haiti starting in 1992 with the CRUDEM hospital in Milot, has had the most impact on me in connection with the Order. Through Dale, I was able to learn about the impact of meaningful work in countries that are vulnerable, poor, and prone
to disasters.
"Being part of Malteser International Americas has made a big impact on my life.
I have been to Lourdes many times and met people involved with Malteser International in Germany. That has given me a more in-depth and broader perspective of the Order and its mission. When you support Malteser International Americas, you are involved with a group of committed experts. You help carry out important work internationally and of world-wide importance.
"In short, you are part of a life line, especially during disasters, to millions of people across the globe who need our help. There’s no better way to reach out to them than through Malteser International Americas.”
