Supporting Hurricane Dorian relief efforts in the Bahamas
As part of the global emergency relief network, Malteser International Americas is in contact with official channels (NEMA, OCHA-Reliefweb, etc.), as well as the Embassy of the Order of Malta to the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.
We will be supporting the emergency response once the search and rescue operations are concluded and the government has cleared the affected islands for debris removal and recovery/reconstruction operations.
In collaboration with the Order of Malta in the Bahamas and The Archbishop of Nassau, Malteser International Americas will provide the following:
Assisting displaced people that have been evacuated to New Providence/Nassau at the level of existing official shelters. This includes the provision of basic items such as food, water and hygiene kits/clothes. A special shelter for people with disability located in Nassau has been identified as a priority for this type of intervention.
Working in partnership with the local parishes of Freeport and Marsh Harbor to support sheltering and reconstruction efforts by means of importing building materials. This action would benefit from the Exigency Order approved by the Ministry of Finance to allow importation of selected relief good through a simplified procedure.
