Volunteer mothers make a Peruvian soup kitchen feel like home
Six year old Thiago and 49 other little school children have reasons to smile each day. And that is because mothers from the community volunteer their time to make sure every child in the San Juan Bautista center, a soup kitchen we support in Lima, Peru, have have nutritious, homemade meals.
In this part of the Peru, life tends to be harsh, even more for the younger ones who suffer from psychosocial issues and endure a life of poverty. If it wasn't for our soup kitchen run by Malteser Peru, our partner on-the-ground, many children would go without food and nurturing that every child needs to live a happy life.
Each day, Thiago and the other children are greeted by a group of volunteer mothers who have committed their lives to these children, making sure they do not fall through the cracks.
These host moms have become the heart and soul of the soup kitchen, cultivating a home like environment while cooking delicious, balanced meals, giving hugs, and caring for children like their own. Because of the tireless efforts of these moms, the San Juan Bautista soup kitchen kids achieve food security and can concentrate on being children, rather than worrying about where they will get their next meal.
