Relief where Hurricane Maria made landfall
While in Puerto Rico, Malteser International Americas' Assessment Team visited the town of Punta Santiago in Humacao, in southeastern region of the island, where the eye of the Hurricane Maria made landfall. They also visited the town of Guaynabo, in the outskirts of San Juan.
Since October 13th, Malteser International has supported the Puerto Rico Delegation of the Order of Malta, which has operated two Emergency Assistance Posts distributing hot meals, water, and basic necessities to members of the communities who have lost their home, who have no electricity, and who are suffering.
In Punta Santiago the area received storm surge of five to seven feet, literally washing away everything in the area, with much of the region still under stagnant water. The Delegation installed two large tents and a make-shift kitchen at Nuestra SeƱora del Carmen Parish to serve the community hot meals and bottled water daily, and also to provide additional food products for the locals to take home.
Once a week doctors who are members of the Delegation provide primary medical attention to the local population in a health post they established at the Parish. This Post operates daily and it is expected to remain a needed relief center in the region until well into 2018.
A similar distribution center was set up in Guaynabo, offering nutritious homemade meals to families in the community two days a week.
Post- Hurricane Maria, over 15,000 hot meals have been served, nearly 20,000 bottles of water have been distributed, and over 7,000 non-perishable food items given to those who are in most need, at the distribution centers. Donate today to Puerto Rico's recovery.
