Maui, Hawaii- In the wake of the devastating Lahaina and Kula wildfires that ravaged Maui on August 8, 2023, a glimmer of hope has emerged for the survivors. Thanks to the generous efforts of Malteser International Americas and the dedicated volunteers at the Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church Maui Disaster Relief Team, we will provide aid to over 1,500 survivors.

Malteser International Americas has not only raised awareness but also $250,000 in funds for this crucial cause. These funds will support the Maui Disaster Relief and St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, who are working tirelessly to assist those impacted by the wildfires.

The project goal is simple yet profound: to offer financial support to the survivors of the Lahaina and Kula wildfires in Maui. This initiative is driven by the objective to devote over 32 hours per week each to vet and qualify more than 1,500 financial relief applicants by December of 2023.

The survivors of these wildfires have faced immense challenges. While many have found temporary shelter in hotels, they have lost their homes, vehicles, personal belongings, and their way of life. The financial burdens continue as they grapple with mortgage payments, vehicle replacement costs, college expenses, utilities, and the transition into temporary long-term housing or home rentals. The reduction in tourism in Lahaina and Ka`anapali has led to job losses, with many survivors relying on reduced unemployment benefits, which are far less than their previous full-time employment income. In some heartbreaking cases, families have lost their medical benefits, leaving them with substantial healthcare costs, some as high as $1,700 per month for a family of four.

Survivors have sought support from government agencies, non-profit organizations, and private resources, but these may not cover all their expenses. As a result, there is a prevailing fear about how they will manage their past, current, and future bills.

The situation is expected to become even more challenging as more survivors must transition into long-term temporary housing. This shift will bring new needs, including essential household items like kitchenware, bedroom furniture, and bathroom supplies.

The geographical scope of this relief effort is the entire island of Maui, with a specific focus on the wildfire-affected areas of Lahaina and Kula. The impact of the fires extends beyond these areas, affecting individuals who might have lived in one part of the island and worked in the wildfire-affected regions, leading to a loss of their primary income.

The joint effort of Malteser International Americas and the Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church Maui Disaster Relief Team represents a shining example of how compassion, dedication, and collective action can make a real difference in the lives of those facing adversity. As they work tirelessly to help survivors rebuild their lives, it’s a testament to the resilience and strength of the Maui community, who stand together in the face of crisis and offer hope to those in need.
